At the beginning of the second quarter of the year, the Supreme Court overturned a ruling that had declared online sports betting illegal in all bity one state – Nevada. Following this ruling, several states have rushed to make sports betting legal and entrepreneurs have quickly set up business.

States that Have Already Legalized Sports Betting

New Jersey

After the governor for NJ signed into law the sports betting bill, a William Hill sportsbook launched its operations – with the governor being the first customer to be served. Borgata followed closely right before others – FanDuel sportsbook too – launched their services.

It had a head start and now other states will be hoping to catch up. The state is already well established in this sector and so naturally many other states will be hoping to learn the ropes from Nevada and also make alliances for strength.

Delaware is taking one step at a time. In June, 2018, the state allowed single-game betting in three casinos within the state. Other wagering options would be available in different spots and in months to come. The state received a boost when the Supreme caught declared the law restricting single-game betting options to Nevada alone unconstitutional. Now, Delaware is ready to go full-scale into sports betting.

August 1 was when two of MGM Resorts casinos booked their first spots bets. This happened following the Supreme Court’s decision, but the state’s Gaming Commission recommended that betting take place in-person. Mobile wagering is yet to be allowed in the state, but who knows what the future holds? More companies are expected to offer sports betting as the college season and the pro season draw near.

West Virginia

Hollywood Casino, which is a Penn National-owned sportsbook, opened its doors in August 30, making sports betting in West Virginia official. Both online wagering and in-person betting are now legal in the state and numbers are favorable. More players are expected to come on board.

Other States

Three states are still fine-tuning things to bring sports betting to the people. Pennsylvania is still working on concerns raised by the NFL – about consumer protection and enforcement – and so will not be launching until all the parties agree.

States on Hold

Rhode Island is looking at October 1 as the date when all systems go, but only two locations will provide in-person sports betting – a location in Lincoln and another in Tiverton. There was no mention of mobile betting.

New York filed the motion to offer sports betting five years ago and was expected to be among the first to implement it after the Supreme Court’s decision. This hasn’t been the case yet as there are matters to be concluded before the four locations selected in 2013 can be ready to launch. In the meantime, it is expected that legislation to go full-scale sports betting will be reintroduced in 2019 as it failed in 2018.

Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, Minnesota, and Kansas are among the states moving towards legalization of sports betting in US.
